Sumudu Medawela is a dedicated lecturer and Specialist trainee in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery affiliated with the Faculty of Dental Sciences at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Currently, he is undergoing Overseas training in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Morriston Hospital, Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom, with the aim of obtaining board certification in Sri Lanka.
His academic journey, which began in 2011 as an undergraduate clinical teacher in oral medicine and radiology, has spanned over a decade. He earned their BDS(Hons) degree from the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2011 and completed his MD in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2022 from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
In addition to their medical pursuits, he holds a keen interest in Alternative medicine and has acquired a 'Diploma in Acupuncture' from the Medicina Alternativa Institute affiliated with the Open International University of Complementary Medicine-USA (February 2006).
During his training in maxillofacial surgery, he received extensive training in various areas including Oral Cancer diagnosis and management, Reconstruction, Facial trauma, Orthognathic Surgery, Salivary Gland disorders, Odontogenic cysts and tumours, TMJ ankylosis, and Congenital and developmental disorders such as cleft lip and palate. He was trained in a ‘Smile Train’ Global programme-enabled centre which is one of the leading cleft centres in the country. He possesses special surgical and research a special interests in orthognathic surgery, facial aesthetics, and virtual surgical planning, and he is deeply committed to improving dental undergraduate education. Sumudu is currently undergoing professional training in Intravenous sedation in Dentistry.
His achievements extend beyond the academic sphere; he has received numerous national and international awards, co-authored several international and national scientific publications and books, and contributed significantly to the development of national protocols.
Despite their rigorous academic pursuits, he maintains a passionate interest in Cricket, having represented his school and professional organizations in Sri Lanka. He is also a member of the Llangennech Cricket Club, one of the oldest Cricket Clubs in the United Kingdom, and was part of the champion team of the South Wales Cricket League – Division 4. Additionally, he is a professionally trained vocalist and indulges in his love for cooking Asian dishes during his leisure time.
