About us

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is housed in the ground floor of the B building of the Faculty of Dental Sciences. There are four academic staff members presently attached to the Department:

• Prof AM Attygalla – Professor in OMS and Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
• Dr P Wijeykoon – Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
• Dr NSS Jayasuriya – Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
• Dr K Kapugama – Senior Lecturer and Honorary Acting Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

The academic surgeons attached to the department are service, research and teaching oriented and engaged in continuous medical education which keeps them updated with the most current treatment methods in OMS practice. Regular collaboration with international experts helps to keep the standards high. OMS, at the Dental Faculty is internationally recognized and provides fellowships to many international Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and to elective students from overseas dental and medical schools. It conducts many training workshops for local and overseas trainees to improve the quality of care provided.

In addition, there are post graduate trainees attached to PGIM (Registrar/Senior Registrar), about twelve House Officers/ Senior House Officers (SHO) and academic staff on temporary basis attached to the Department to provide much needed service function for the patients. Undergraduate dental students manage pre-selected patients for their training requirement under the direct supervision of the academic staff.

Specialties & Treatments

OMS Department is involved in research activities related to the field where we strive to give the best treatment and care to the patients. The Department is highly specialized in the fields of Oral cancer, Cleft lip and palate and corrective jaw surgeries.

Oral cancer related surgical and palliative care focus mainly on microvascular surgery to bring the best treatment outcomes in oral cancer treatment.

With a fully functional SmileTrain cleft center, attached to the department, it provides a comprehensive care for the treatment needs of patients with oro-facial clefts.

Treatments provided:

• Minor Oral Surgery – Dentoalveolar surgery such as surgery to remove impacted teeth, difficult tooth extractions, extractions on medically compromised patients, root canal surgeries, preprosthetic surgery.
• Extractions and treatment under anesthesia for uncooperative and special children.
• Diagnosis and treatment of noncancer (cysts, tumors etc.)
• Diagnosis and treatment of ablative and reconstructive surgery, of oral & head and neck cancer.
• Diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous malignancy in face.
• Management of oral mucosal diseases as ulcers, growths, blisters and white/red patches in cheek, tongue, palate, lips and gums.
• Diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial malformations such as cleft lip and palate.
• Diagnosis and treatment of salivary gland problems.
• Diagnosis and treatment of jaw deformities. Orthognathic surgery is performed for surgical correction of jaw deformities and facial asymmetry.
• Diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue trauma of the oral and maxillofacial region (jaw fractures, cheek bone fractures, LeFort fracture and eye socket fractures).
• Surgical treatment of sleep apnea (maxilla mandibular advancement).

Location

Division of Oral Medicine and Radiology is housed in the ground floor of the B building of the Faculty of Dental Sciences.

In addition, there are post graduate trainees attached to PGIM, about two House Officers/ Senior House Officers and academic staff on temporary basis and three radiographers (From Ministry of Health) attached to the Division to provide much needed service function for the patients.

Available services

• Diagnosis and treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial diseases, Oral manifestation of systemic disease and Oral diseases causing Systemic diseases – Especially medical management of patients with Oral potentially malignant diseases and Oral cancer.
• Provide Oral care of medically complex patients receiving treatment for cancer, Diabetes, Infectious disease etc.
• Tobacco cessation clinic – This clinic provides dedicated service for habit intervention in patients with the habit of betel chewing.
• Occlusal splints – As part of a treatment for tempero-mandibular joint disorders.
• Investigations specific to salivary gland diseases – Sialograms, Sialometry.
• Laboratory Services – haematological investigations.
• Ultra Sound scanning of the head and neck region.
• Imaging and radiographic interpretation of oral and maxillofacial disease using newer and advance maxillofacial imaging and radiographic techniques – Performs all types of dental radiographs – IOPA, Bite wing, Occlusal radiographs, TMJ views, OPG/DPT, Cephalograms, including Cone beam CT scans.
