Department of Prosthetic Dentistry

An Overview of the Department

The department of Prosthetic Dentistry was established in 1980 as one of the first departments in the Faculty. Our goal is to produce a graduate with basic knowledge and skills in the rehabilitation of patients who have lost their teeth and supporting hard and soft tissues in order to restore aesthetics and functions with the provision of appropriate prosthesis.

The department is equipped with 20 dental units and modern dental laboratory facilities in order to support the management of patients with basic and advanced prosthetic treatments.

Services

The department of Prosthetic Dentistry acts as a tertiary referral center for all prosthodontics needs and is one of the few centers in Sri Lanka that is capable of providing all treatment modalities in prosthetic management of patients.

The main services provided by the department include, provision of,

  • Removable prosthesis
  • Maxillofacial prosthesis
  • Implant supported prosthesis

These services are provided by university academics and government dental surgeons as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students under supervision.

 

Postgraduate Degrees:

The training of postgraduate students of Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) University of Colombo, who follow the Doctor of Medicine course in Restorative Dentistry (MD Resto) and Diploma in Hospital Dental Practice (DHDP) is provided by the departments.

In addition, the department plays a major role in the training of dental technicians who are attached to the Dental Auxiliary Training School (DATS) as well as dental surgery assistants.

Research

Many research activities in relation to patient satisfaction, denture hygiene, Candida, denture marking, dental education etc. are carried out in the department.

Ongoing research activities

    • 1. Denture Hygiene and Self-Reported Denture Hygiene Practices Among a Group of Denture Wearers Attending a University Dental Hospital
    • 2. Effectiveness of Demonstration Videos Verses Live Demonstrations in Teaching Laboratory Techniques to Dental Students
    • 3. Assessment of fracture Patterns and associated Factors in a group of acrylic denture wearers
    • 4. A Study on attitudes and extent of the practice of denture marking in Sri Lanka and effectiveness of a “Denture marking” system to suit clinical and forensic requirement (in collaboration with Ministry of Health Sri Lanka)
