Dental Auxiliary Training School

An Overview of the Unit

A dental auxiliary is any of the dentist’s supporting team including dental assistants, dental therapists, dental hygienists and dental technicians. Their service is important to deliver quality modern dental treatment efficiently and effectively. To overcome the lack of trained dental auxiliaries in Sri Lanka, the Faculty of Dental Sciences established the Dental Auxiliary Training School (DATS) in the year 2000.

Currently, the Dental Auxiliary Training School conducts the Diploma in Dental Assisting and Higher Diploma in Dental Technology courses.

Diploma in Dental Assisting

Higher Diploma in Dental Technology

Course admission and selection

A qualified dental surgery assistant will be able to carry out a multitude of tasks including the following,

    • Preparing the patient for treatment
    • Sterilizing instruments
    • Assisting the procedure (passing instruments, holding suction devices)

    •           Exposing dental radiograph

Eligibility for admission
To be considered for admission as a candidate in this course one must have the following qualifications,

    • 1. Should,

      • a. Have passed the General Certificate of Education (Advance Level) or an equivalent examination.
      • OR
      • b. Have completed a foundation course of SLFQ level 2 and passed the aptitude test conducted by DATS
      • OR
      • c. Have completed 3 years work experience as an untrained Dental Surgery Assistant in an institute acceptable to the board of management of DATS
    2. Should not be more than 30 years of age

Further these applicants will be interviewed by an interview board appointed by DATS board of Management.

Course admission and selection

A qualified dental technician will be skilled in the construction of,

    • Removable prosthesis
    • Fixed prosthesis
    • Orthodontic appliances

To be considered for admission as a candidate in this course one must have the following qualifications,

    • 1. Should,
      • a. Have a minimum number of a pass for English at the GCE (O/L) examination and passed 3 subjects at the GCE (A/L) examination or equivalent exam
      • OR
      • b. Have completed a course of NVQF level 5 or a foundation course equivalent to SLFQ level 2
      • OR
      • c. Have 3 years work experience as an untrained dental technician
    • 2. Should not be more than 30 years of age

Further these applicants will be interviewed by an interview board appointed by DATS board of Management.

Recruitment and Payments

Students will be recruited each year for both Diploma in Dental Assisting program and Diploma in Dental Technology. Courses will be advertised in the local newspapers.

Payments

           Diploma in Dental Assisting : Rs. 175,000 /-

    Higher Diploma in Dental Technology : Rs. 750,000/-
