An Overview of the Department

The Department of Restorative Dentistry received department status in 1980 and is responsible for teaching, service and research pertaining to the fields of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Materials.

The Department of Restorative Dentistry provides outpatient treatment for all commonly occurring dental disorders which includes caries, dental trauma, tooth wear, discolouration of teeth and fix replacement of congenital and acquired loss of teeth. It acts as a tertiary referral center for all restorative needs.
The clinic consists of 27 dental units which states of all facilities such as microscopy and a fully fledged dental laboratory. Some other services include functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of teeth and aesthetic procedures such as Bleeching, Laminates, Root Canal Treatment, Crowns and other indirect restorations

Postgraduate Degrees:

The department carries out MD (Restorative Dentistry) training programme for majority of postgraduates who would end up as specialists in Restorative Dentistry. This course is conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo and the Department of Restorative Dentistry is the oldest recognized training centre which has provided training to all restorative specialists. Consultant clinics are done on 03 days of the week with the postgraduates. In addition to their treatment sessions, journal clubs and other presentations are done by the postgraduates. The faculty is also a centre for training for the Diploma in Hospital Dental Practice(DHDP). This is also conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and the faculty conducts a 03 day lecture programme every month for the one year course. Department is planning to introduce some MSc programmes in endodontics in the near future.

Research

Many research activities in relation to endodontics, prosthodontics, dental trauma, dental materials is carried out in the department and many of them are published on peer review journals.

It is mandatory for all postgraduates to carry out research activities which department encourages and supports.
