Research Information

What is the role of our faculty in research?

Since we are the only institute in Sri Lanka to promote dental education and research, and also possess our own dental teaching hospital, we have a tremendous role in encouraging both basic and clinical research to address local and global needs in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral diseases.

How is the quality of our research assured?

Generally, the standard of the faculty research activities are assured through the faculty ethics review committee and the faculty research committee. The ethics review committee is involved in reviewing the ethical and scientific standards of the projects and granting approval for research projects while the faculty research committee is engaged in funding research grants through university research grants and monitoring undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. In addition, the senate research committee, the apex body in monitoring Peradeniya university research activities and the international research centre of the university which facilitates international collaborative research always help us in maintaining the standard of our research. Moreover the researchers are encouraged to present their findings in local and international research forums.

Do we have any research grants to support research activities?

Research activities in our faculty are supported by local granting bodies such as the UGC (through university research grants), NSF and NRC. Some researchers are supported by international funding bodies through international collaborators.

Have we got any industrial collaboration to promote research?

Our industrial collaborations have also enhanced our research potential, especially in the field of natural products.

Do we have any MOUs with international universities to promote research?

Our MOUs with world renounced international universities have promoted high-tech collaborative research, facilitating publications in peer-reviewed indexed journals with high impact factors.

Have we won any research awards?

Our researchers have acclaimed many local and international awards for their research publications. We have several presidential award winners every year, a CVCD excellence award winner and a Hatton award winner for excellence in research.

Do we possess any patents for research innovations?

The international patents possessed by our academic staff provide evidence for the strength of our research capacity.

What are the latest developments in the faculty to encourage research?

We have incorporated an undergraduate research project into the new 5 year curriculum implemented in 2016. In addition, an undergraduate research symposium is organized from 2019 to communicate findings of the undergraduate research projects. At this event, students excelled in research are rewarded. In the same year, we have initiated a rewarding system for the best performed academic researcher also.

Division of Pharmacology

Our research interests are to see theeffectsof pharmaceutical products on bone formation and resorption. We are mainly looking at how these substances affect the osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Our staff members collaborate with other foreign institutions in carrying out the research work. We are also involved in conducting research in complementary and alternative therapy for small children and looking and the effects of dietary habits on malnutrition in pre-school children.

Department of Oral Pathology

Numerous research activities are undertaken by the department, focusing on all aspects of diseases which occur in the head and neck region, with emphasis on potentially malignant disorders such as oral submucous fibrosis and malignancies such as oral squamous cell cracinoma. In addition, research activities based on salivary gland disorders and odontogenic tumours are also being carried out. Extensive facilities of the department have paved the way to perform research activities in the fields of histopathology, cytology, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry. Number of international collaborative research activates are in operation at present. Further Department publishes substantial number of research papers nationally, and internationally annually. Presentation of research papers both nationally and internationally is also a very substantial event of the Department every year.

  • Patient satisfaction in complete denture wearers” – on ongoing study.
  • Oral health care in gediatric patients.

Department of Restorative Dentistry

Many research activities in relation to endodontics, prosthodontics, dental trauma, dental materials is carried out in the department and many of them are published on peer review journals. It is mandatory for all postgraduates to carry out research activities which department encourages and supports.
