Undergraduate Programmes

We offer the one and only undergraduate degree programme in dentistry in Sri Lanka. This is a 5 year (10 semesters) programme which is in par with the internationally accepted norms in dental education and consists of 45 courses carrying 160 credits.

During the first two semesters, we lay a solid foundation for clinical dentistry by providing a sound knowledge for our students on normal structure, functions and biochemical reactions in the human body with special reference to oral cavity.

During 3rd and 4th semesters, our students acquire the knowledge and skills required to deal with common human diseases. During this period they have to attend medical and surgical ward classes at Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.

From 5th semester onwards, the teaching programme is mainly focused on clinical dental practice. Before carrying out clinical procedures on patients, our students undergo a compulsory training in a simulated clinical environment in the dental skills laboratory. Afterwards, they have a state of the art clinical training in the clinics of Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthetic Dentistry, Paedodontics, Orthodontics and the operating theatre of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery under the supervision of consultant dental surgeons attached to the faculty.

Training in research takes place from 7th -9th semesters.

In the last two semesters, our students will undergo further clinical training in the Department of Comprehensive Oral Health Care, where they learn to treat patients more independently in an environment similar to that of a General Dental Practitioner.

Postgraduate Programmes

The perception among some professional dental surgeons that postgraduate courses are for those seeking academic careers has by and large been dispelled, and dental graduates are increasingly aware of the benefits of such courses to update and advance their knowledge. The Faculty has sought to meet the resultant demand for advanced knowledge by offering appropriately designed postgraduate courses, with combinations of lectures, practical and research in varying proportions and scope that lead to diplomas/degrees.
