Oral cancer is the commonest cancer in Sri Lankan male patients. Therefore it has become a major health problem in the country. Although, oral cancer is the commonest cancer, research in this field is grossly inadequate to understand the disease in our patients, to identify new treatment modalities and to predict their behaviour using molecular techniques. In this respect, it is an urgent need to encourage researchers to address the above issues to improve the survival of oral cancer patients. However, there is no place in the country to carry out research in this field with adequate expertise, manpower and infrastructure facilities. To fulfil this long felt need, Centre for research in oral cancer was established at the Faculty of Dental Sciences to coordinate and conduct research in this important area and is approved by the University Grant Commission.
